"Czech History as a Source of Myth: Beginning to 19th Century"

In 19th Century, much of the Czech history in the past thousand years were reinterpreted to fit the newly invented national discourse. Which parts of pre-modern history had to be re-interpreted, and how? The lecture will cover these topics running from early medieval era to 18th century in search of cornerstones of national myth.

V 19. století mnoho z české historie posledního tisíce let bylo reinterpretováno tak, aby vyhovovalo nově vytvořenému národnímu diskursu. Které části premoderní historie měly být reinterpretovány a jak? Přednáška bude zahrnovat tato témata, která jsou rozvíjena v hledání mylníků národních mýtů od raného středověku do 18. století

"Czech History as Triumph and Tragedy: Modern Era"

The 19th and 20th Centuries represent two decidedly different faces in modern Central European history. In Czech case, the former peaks in the triumph of national independence that is so bereft with internal tensions, it brings about many of the tragedies of the latter. These tragedies are themselves only pronounced representations of some recurring themes such as self-victimization or massive brain drain that is rather characteristic for Czech history as a whole. The lecture will be following these specific problems through brief outline of national history from early 19th century to the dissolution of Czechoslovak state in 1993.

"Česká historie jako triumph a tragédie: Moderní éra"

19. a 20. století je reprezentováno dvěma zásadně rozdílnými obrazy moderní středoevropské historie. Původní vrchol českých dějin v podobě triumfu národní nezávislosti, která byla bez vnitřních tenzí, s sebou později přinesl mnoho tragických momentů historie. Tyto tragédie jsou reprezentované tématy jako sebeobětování nebo masivní odliv mozků, které jsou pro českou historii charakteristické. Přednáška bude zahrnovat tyto specifické problem české historie od počátku 19. století do rozdělení Československa v roce 1993.

Jiri Hutecka, Ph.D., currently a Visiting Associate Professor of History and Frank A. Belousek Distinguished Scholar at the Department of History, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, otherwise an Assistant Professor and the Director of History Institute, University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic. Works in the field of 19th century military history and gender history, especially history of masculinities. Has an upcoming book on morale and masculinity of the Czech soldiers during the First World War.

Jiří Hutečka

Dr. Jiří Hutečka je v současné době hostujícím odborným asistentem a stipendistou Frank A. Belousek Distinguished Scholar na Katedře historie University Nebraska-Lincoln. Zároveň je vedoucím Historického ústavu na FF UHK. Pracuje v oboru vojenské historie a gender historie 19. století, zejména historií maskulinity. Připravená k vydání je jeho nova publikace o morálce a maskulinitě českých vojáků během první světové války.

Day 2

Archaeology

Morning lesson in Archeopark Všestary - dr. Richard Thér

"Magic transformation: pottery firing in prehistoric societies"

The lecture maps basic pottery firing techniques evidenced in archaeological record dated from the Neolithic to the Iron Age in Europe starting from the manufacture of first pottery vessels and ending with the most sophisticated firing process that was developed in Europe in antiquity - the firing of Greek painted vases. Technological principles staying beyond the firing procedures will be explained as well as methods for the identification of pottery firing processes in archaeology. The lecture will take place at Archeopark in Všestary, where various types of archaic pottery firing devices are reconstructed. The principles of pottery firing will be demonstrated on an experimental firing in the replica of the Iron Age up draught kiln. The lecture will be complemented by a commented tour of the permanent exhibition in Archaeopark Všestary.

"Magická proměna: výpal keramiky u pravěkých společností" (R. Thér)

Přednáška mapuje základní postupy výpalu keramiky, dokumentované archeologickými nálezy z období neolitu až doby železné v Evropě, počínaje výrobou první keramiky a konče nejsofistikovanějším postupem výpalu keramiky, jež se v této době v Evropě objevil: výpalem řeckých malovaných váz. Vysvětleny budou technologické principy výpalu keramiky a popsány budou metody identifikace typů výpalu v archeologii. Přednáška se uskuteční v Archeoparku Všestary, kde jsou postaveny repliky různých typů archaických vypalovacích zařízení. Princip výpalu keramiky bude demonstrován praktickou ukázku výpalu v replice hrnčířské dvoukomorové vertikální pece z doby železné. Přednáška bude doplněna o komentovanou prohlídku stálou expozicí Archeoparku ve Všestarech.

Richard Thér

His main research interest is in archaic pyrotechnologies with focus on pottery technology, anthropology of technology and application of experimental archaeology. In his research he develops methodology for the identification of pottery forming techniques and firing procedures based on archaeological pottery. He applies the developed methodology in the study of pottery manufacturing processes in the prehistory of Central Europe and also partly in the Ancient Mediterranean. His current projects are focused on the introduction of potter's wheel and up draught kilns in the Iron Age Central Europe and on the variability of pottery technology as a reflection of a social structure development in the Neolithic society.

Richard Thér

Zabývá se výzkumem pyrotechnologií s důrazem na technologii výroby keramiky a antropologii technologie experimentální archeologií. Ve své odborné činnosti rozvíjí metodiku identifikace technik vytváření a výpalu na základě analýzy archeologické keramiky. Vyvinuté postupy aplikuje při interpretaci postupů ve výrobě keramiky především v pravěku střední Evropy a částečně též v antickém středomoří. Mezi hlavní aktuálně řešená témata patří zavedení hrnčířského kruhu a dvoukomorové vertikální pece v době železné ve střední Evropě a technologická variabilita neolitické keramiky na pozadí vývoje sociálních struktur neolitické společnosti.

"Etruscan archaeology"

Lecture presents basic knowledge of history of this significant cultural group-first urban civilization in the western Mediterranean with substantial impact on the origination of the Roman civilization and thus also whole Western European culture. Lecture aims to individual aspects of everyday life, such as forms of Etruscan cities, political, social and religious system, system of the script or Etruscan language. Archaeological part of the lecture focuses on the history and variability of the funeral rite, architecture or art. Visitors of the lecture gain a general knowledge of the history and culture of this noteworthy ethnic group, appeared in the Italian peninsula already 3000 years ago and vanishing with the rise of the Roman empire in the beginning of the new era.

"Archeologie Etrusků" (M. Trefný)

Přednáška seznámí posluchače s dějinným vývojem tohoto významného etnika-první městské civilizace v západním Středomoří , která měla obrovský vliv rovněž na etablování římské civilizace a tedy také celé západní Evropy. Přednáška je zaměřena rovněž na nejdůležitější aspekty každodenního života jako např. podobu etruských měst, politický, společenský a náboženský systém Etrurie, užívání písma či etruský jazyk. Vlastní archeologická část se pak zaměřuje na dějiny a variabilitu pohřebního ritu, etruskou architekturu či umělecké řemeslo. Absolvent přednášky získá ucelený přehled o dějinách a kultuře tohoto pozoruhodného etnika, které se na italském území objevilo již téměř před třemi tisíci lety a které zaniklo se vzestupem Římského impéria.

Martin Trefný

His main focus is the archaeology of the iron age, especially its earlier part, in the area of central Europe and ancient Mediterranean, with special accent on the various forms of the mutual cultural exchange. His classical activities include the etruscology or antiquity vase painting. He colaborates with the students of the University of Hradec Králové in the excavation of the Etruscan city Tarquinia. Except of his home university, he is external lecturer also in the Charles university Prague or J. E. Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. He is also the director of the Museum of the Říp region in Roudnice nad Labem, where he is active on the field of the regional prehistory.

Day 3

Czech language for foreigners

"Czech language and culture"

The seminar Czech language and culture focuses on teaching the basics of the Czech language to foreign students. The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to the Czech alphabet and the pronunciation of individual sounds. Students will also learn Czech greetings and basic introductory phrases. The final part of the seminar will introduce students to the basic phrases and vocabulary used when ordering meals and drinks in restaurants. If interested, students can then visit a restaurant, where we will practice acquired knowledge.

"Český jazyk a kultura"

Seminář Český jazyk a kultura seznámí zahraniční studenty se základy českého jazyka. Cílem výuky je seznámit studenty s českou abecedou, výslovností jednotlivých hlásek a dále s českými pozdravy a základními seznamovacími frázemi. Dalším tématem bude restaurace, kde se studenti naučí základní fráze používané při objednávání jídla a pití v restauraci a názvy českých pokrmů a nápojů. Po semináři se může, v případě zájmu studentů, uskutečnit procvičování nabytých znalostí v praxi (návštěva restaurace).

She works as a lecturer at the Philosophical faculty of the University of Hradec Králové. She teaches the English language for academic purposes of different English levels (B1,B2, B2+) and also the Czech language for foreign students.

Působí jako lektor na Filozofické fakultě Univerzity Hradec Králové. Vyučuje anglický jazyk pro akademické účely různých úrovní (B1, B2, B2+) a dále český jazyk pro cizince.

Štěpánka Rubešová

She acts as a Head of Centre of Foreign Languages at Philosophical Faculty, University of Hradec Kralove and lectures Spanish and English languages. She has also been teaching Czech language for foreigners at Charles University - Faculty of Medicine and at University of Granada in Spain within the Eramsus + Teaching Mobility. As an academician, teacher or translator she has spent the substantial part of her professional and personal life abroad in Mexico at universities of Carl Rogers, BUAP and Universidad Mexiquense del Bicentenario; in Spain where she graduated from doctoral degree, UNED University, Faculty of Philology. In her free time she likes doing sports and travelling all around the world.

Štěpánka Rubešová

PhDr. Štěpánka Rubešová působí jako vedoucí Centra jazykové přípravy FF UHK. Podílí se na výuce španělského a anglického jazyka, je však i učitelem českého jazyka pro cizince s působností v minulých letech na Lékařské fakultě UK a český jazyk vyučovala také na Universidad de Granada ve Španělsku v rámci Teaching mobilit Erasmus+. Část svého života strávila v zahraničí jako akademický pracovník, učitel a překladatel na univerzitách Carl Rogers a univerzitě BUAP v Pueble v Mexiku, na univerzitě Universidad Mexiquense del Bicentenario v Tenango del Valle v Mexiku, na univerzitě UNED v Madridu ve Španělsku, kde absolvovala své doktorské studium na fakultě filologie. Ve svém volném čase ráda sportuje a poznává vzdálené kraje a nové kultury.

Day 5

Excursion to Kuks Hospital

All-day outdoor activity - dr. Petr Polehla

Kuks Hospital - the jewel of Czech Baroque art

The highlight of the excursion is a unique monument of central European baroque landscape-planning, architecture and statuary art. At the same time, the Kuks Hospital is a crypt of the hospital´s founder F. A. Špork, and the seat of the Czech Pharmaceutical Museum with a baroque apothecary. The participants will also visit the Rentz Museum of baroque prints, presenting the greatest copper engraver of the baroque period in Bohemia. Matyas Braun's Bethlehem in the near-by woods - a unique collection of statues carved into natural rock, which is within a walking distance from Kuks, will be the final destination of the excursion.

Hospital Kuks - klenot českého barokního umění

Hlavním cílem exkurze bude ve střední Evropě unikátní památka barokního utváření krajiny, architektury a sochařství. V hospitalu Kuks se též nachází krypta jeho zakladatele hraběte F. A. Šporka, dále České farmaceutické museum a barokní lékárna.

Účastníci exkurze navštíví rovněž Rentzovo museum barokních tisků, které představuje největšího mědirytce barokních Čech. Posledním cílem exkurze bude Braunův Betlém v blízkém lese. Jde o unikátní soubor plastik vytesaných přímo do skály.

Petr Polehla

He teaches at the Department of Auxiliary Historical Sciences and Archive Studies. His research interest is focused on church history, hagiography, and baroque theatre and spirituality. The study of religious symbols and iconography also belong into the scope of his activities.

Mgr. Petr Polehla, Ph.D. vyučuje na Katedře pomocných věd historických a archivnictví. Věnuje se církevním dějinám, hagiografii, baroknímu divadlu a spiritualitě. K jeho odborným zájmům patří také ikonografie a náboženská symbolika.
